How to Find Trending TikTok Videos in Your Niche Without Doomscrolling

TikTok search and the For You page both answer the wrong question. Here is how to find the videos actually overperforming in your niche, using search properly and then measuring what you find.

TikTok gives you better search than Instagram and still won't rank anything by performance. Keyword search returns relevance, the For You page returns what it predicts you personally will watch, and neither one answers "what is trending in my niche right now."

The method that answers it has two halves. Use TikTok's search to find the accounts and keywords worth watching, then rank those accounts by outlier score to find out which of their videos actually overperformed. Search finds candidates. Measurement tells you which candidates mean anything.

Doomscrolling feels like research because you're seeing a lot of content in your niche. What you're seeing is what TikTok predicted you'd watch, filtered through your own viewing history, with no view counts in front of you. An hour of it produces a vague feeling rather than a list.

Not directly. TikTok's discovery surfaces are built for viewers and advertisers rather than for competitive research.

Keyword search ranks by relevance and engagement signals TikTok doesn't publish, so a video high in the results might have 40,000 views or four million. Sound pages show you which videos used an audio track, ordered by TikTok's own ranking. The Creative Center is genuinely useful for advertisers looking at trending hashtags, sounds and top-performing ads, and it's aimed at paid creative rather than at what an individual creator in your niche is doing organically.

What TikTok does give you, and Instagram doesn't, is a view count on every single thumbnail in every public profile grid, plus public shares and saves on every video. The data is unusually good. It's the sorting that's missing.

Step 1: use TikTok search to build a list, not to draw conclusions

Search is for finding accounts. Run these and collect names rather than videos.

  • Your main topic as a plain keyword. Not a hashtag. TikTok indexes spoken words and on-screen text, so searching the phrase your audience would say surfaces videos that hashtag research misses entirely.
  • The question your audience asks. Search the literal question. The creators answering it well are the ones to watch.
  • A competitor's handle. Then open the profile and check who they duet, stitch and reply to.
  • The sound from any video you already know performed. The sound page shows everyone who used it, which is a fast way to find creators working the same format.

Aim for 10 to 15 accounts. Write them into a sheet with a note on why each one is there. The competitor research guide covers structuring that list across niches.

Step 2: rank each account and keep only the outliers

This is the step that turns a list of accounts into a list of ideas. For each account, you need to know which of their videos beat their own normal, which means comparing every video against a baseline for that creator.

By hand, that's recording 50 view counts per profile into a sheet and dividing each by =MEDIAN(B2:B51). It works and it costs about 40 minutes per account. With the free ViewRank extension:

  1. Open the creator's profile with the Videos tab showing at tiktok.com/@handle.
  2. Click the ViewRank icon, keep Videos selected, pick a recent count, and press Rank Now.
  3. Click the Outliers tab in the ranked overlay.
  4. Set the export scope to Only Outliers, choose For Sheets, and copy.

Ranking works on creator profiles only, not on search results or the For You feed. That restriction is the right one rather than a gap, because a search result mixes videos from accounts of wildly different sizes, and ranking those against each other produces a leaderboard of follower counts. If you want one creator's top videos rather than a niche sweep, how to find the most viewed videos on any TikTok account covers that.

Step 3: read engagement rate against the creator's median

TikTok publishes enough per video to run a quality check that Instagram makes impossible, and it changes which video you pick.

The stats strip on a ranked profile shows Median ER, that creator's typical engagement rate, and every card carries its own. Compare the two.

A video with a big view multiplier and engagement below the creator's median usually got lucky with distribution. It reached a lot of people who didn't care much. Sounds and visual gimmicks do this routinely, and it rarely repeats on purpose. A video with a big multiplier and engagement above the median reached a wide audience and connected with it. That's the one to rebuild.

Shares and saves split the question further. Shares tell you what somebody sent to a friend, which costs the sender their friend's attention and is the closest thing on TikTok to a real recommendation. Saves tell you what somebody wanted to keep, which almost always means the video contained something practical. A tutorial that overperforms on saves and a joke that overperforms on shares are both outliers, and copying them asks opposite things of you.

Step 4: find the structure that repeats

Sort your combined table by outlier score and describe the top 30 videos by their structure, with the topic removed.

"Creator reacts to a screenshot." "Silent demonstration with captions counting steps." "Claim in the first second, evidence withheld until the end." Once every video has a structure written next to it, count them.

One creator using a structure has a habit. Four creators across different accounts using the same structure inside a month is a trend in your niche, and it's the only finding here that justifies changing your content plan.

Then check the dates. A structure that peaked in June is history, and the useful window is roughly the last 30 days. Anything under 48 hours old hasn't finished collecting views, so its multiplier is still moving and shouldn't be trusted yet.

How do you keep this current without doing it weekly?

Track the accounts instead of checking them. Add each creator to the Viral Tracker in ViewRank AI by handle or link, pick TikTok as the platform, and it measures their baseline and re-checks every few days.

New videos crossing 2x their creator's average appear in your Outliers we found feed with the multiplier attached and a "New" pill, and videos younger than 48 hours are held back until they settle. Sort that feed by newest or highest score, filter it to one creator, and hide what isn't relevant.

Each outlier carries Transcribe, Visuals and Scripts buttons, which is the difference between a research habit you keep and one you abandon in week three. Details on the tracked accounts page, and the full routine is in how to track Instagram and TikTok creators.

Get the transcript before you rewatch it. The spoken opening does most of the work, and reading it as text strips out the delivery so you can judge whether the words would hold up in your voice. The free TikTok transcript generator returns the spoken lines from any public video with no account needed.

Watch it once with the sound off. If it still holds you, the visual structure is carrying the video and you can rebuild it in a different language, a different niche and a different voice. If it falls apart silently, the sound or the script is the thing to study, and copying the visuals will get you nothing. The full version of that read is how to break down a viral video scene by scene.

Check whether the format has already crossed to Instagram. Formats move between the platforms constantly, usually TikTok first, and a structure that's saturated on TikTok is often still fresh on Reels. The Instagram version of this research covers that side.

FAQ

How do you find trending TikTok videos in your niche?

Use TikTok keyword search to build a list of 10 to 15 accounts in and around your niche, then rank each profile by outlier score to see which of their videos beat that creator's own average. Search finds the accounts, and ranking tells you which of their videos actually overperformed.

Can you sort TikTok search results by views?

No, and it wouldn't help much if you could. Search returns videos from accounts of very different sizes, so ranking them together produces a list of large accounts rather than a list of good ideas. Performance comparisons only mean something within one creator's profile.

Is the For You page useful for niche research?

Not really. It's personalized to your own watch history and shows no view counts, so an hour of scrolling produces an impression rather than a list. It's useful for spotting accounts you didn't know about, which then belong in your research list.

Does TikTok search index spoken words?

TikTok indexes on-screen text and spoken content as well as captions and hashtags, so searching a plain phrase your audience would actually say surfaces videos that hashtag-only research misses.

How often should you refresh niche research on TikTok?

Weekly is enough to catch a format while it's still working, given the useful window on a trending structure is roughly 30 days. Continuous tracking removes the need to remember, which is usually what makes the habit fail.

What is the difference between a trending video and an outlier video?

Trending usually describes a format, sound or topic that many accounts are using right now. An outlier is one specific video that beat its own account's normal performance by a wide margin. Several outliers sharing a structure is what a trend looks like in the data.
