What thumbnail sizes does YouTube keep?
Six files per video at most, and the biggest is 1280 x 720. These are the real addresses YouTube stores, which is worth knowing because every thumbnail tool on the internet, including this one, reads the same six files.

The tool measures each file it finds and prints the real numbers, so what you read on the card is what you get in the download.
There is a sixth file, 120 x 90, left over from YouTube's early years. We do not offer it, because nothing is designed at that size any more and it is too small to judge a thumbnail by. The only exception is a video so old that YouTube kept nothing else, and then you get it rather than nothing.
Can you download a YouTube thumbnail in 4K?
No. YouTube does not give anyone a 4K thumbnail, and every tool that advertises one is selling you the same 1280 x 720 file with a bigger label on it.
The confusion is new, and it is understandable. In March 2026 YouTube raised its rules for creators: the recommended upload is now 3840 x 2160 and the file size limit went from 2MB to 50MB, because more people watch on televisions. So creators really do upload 4K thumbnails now.
What YouTube gives out did not change. We checked videos published this week by some of the biggest channels on the platform, and the largest file YouTube returns for any of them is still 1280 x 720. The creator's 4K original goes in, and a smaller copy comes out.
One promise on our side. This tool asks YouTube for larger files on every video rather than assuming the old limit. The day YouTube starts sharing what creators upload, it will appear here, unresized and unlabelled with anything it is not.
Why is the big size missing on some videos?
Because maxresdefault is a privilege, not a rule. YouTube only creates the 1280 x 720 file in certain cases, mostly newer videos and videos where the creator uploaded their own thumbnail. Older videos, and plenty from small channels, stop at 640 x 480 or even 480 x 360.
This is also why a thumbnail you saved elsewhere sometimes looks blurry. The tool you used probably grabbed a small file and said nothing. When the big size is missing here, you see the biggest one that exists, measured, and you know exactly what you are getting.
If a video shows nothing at all, it is one of two things. The video is private, and YouTube shows its pictures to nobody, or the link points at something that is not a video, like a channel or a playlist.
How do you get a YouTube Shorts cover without black bars?
Paste the Shorts link into the box above and the vertical cover comes first, marked as the real one, up to 1080 x 1920 and in its true 9:16 shape.
Other tools get this wrong because they ask YouTube the wrong question. The standard thumbnail files are all wide, made for regular videos, so when a tool requests one of those for a Short, YouTube squeezes the vertical cover into the middle of a wide frame and fills the sides with dark bars. That letterboxed picture is what nearly every thumbnail site returns, including several whose pages promise a vertical format. The true cover lives in a separate file most tools never request, and it holds more pixels than the biggest wide thumbnail, which makes it the best image YouTube has for a Short.
You still get the wide version underneath, named for what it is, in case a wide crop is what you want.
One thing worth knowing about what you will see. For years a Short's cover was simply a frame the creator picked during upload, which is why so many covers are mid-blink screenshots. Only since late July 2026 can creators in the YouTube Partner Program upload a designed cover on new Shorts. So when a cover you fetch here is a plain video frame, that really is the cover, not a mistake in the reading.
What happens to the links you paste?
Nothing, and for once that is the plain truth. The images move from YouTube's servers straight to your browser. Your links never reach a server of ours, we store nothing, and there is no history of what anyone looked at.
That is also the honest reason there is no limit here. Our transcript tools for TikTok and Instagram cost us money on every video, so they carry a daily cap. This one costs us nothing per use, so you can save two thumbnails or two hundred.
When the thumbnail is not the answer
A thumbnail tells you why somebody clicked. It cannot tell you why they kept watching, and for short video that second question decides everything.

Am I allowed to use someone else's thumbnail?
Saving one to study it or keep a reference is what this tool is for. The picture itself belongs to the creator who made it, so do not reupload it as your own thumbnail. Beyond the ethics, audiences notice, and YouTube handles copyright complaints on the owner's side.
How do I save a thumbnail on iPhone or Android?
The same way: paste the link, press Save JPG. On Android the image lands in your downloads. On iPhone it goes to Downloads inside the Files app, and from there Share puts it in Photos.
Can I get thumbnails from private or deleted videos?
No. If a video needs a login to watch, YouTube shows its thumbnail to nobody, and no tool can change that. The tool tells you when this is why nothing came.
What formats can I download?
JPG is YouTube's original file with nothing done to it. PNG and WebP are written from those exact pixels by your own browser. One note: Safari cannot write WebP, so there you get JPG and PNG.

Why does my saved thumbnail look blurry?
