How Many Views Is Viral on TikTok and Instagram Reels? (2026 Numbers)

There's no official number. Here are real average views by account size on TikTok and Instagram Reels, and the simple test for when a video has gone viral.

There is no official number of views that makes a video viral. Neither TikTok nor Instagram defines one, and the same view count means opposite things on different accounts. The useful test is relative: a video has gone viral for an account when it gets several times that account's normal views. At ViewRank we call a video at 2x its account's normal an outlier worth studying, and 5x to 10x is viral by any fair reading.

Raw numbers still help as a reference point. In 2025, TikTok accounts with 1,000 to 5,000 followers averaged about 350 views per video, while accounts with 100,000 to 1 million followers averaged about 34,900 (Socialinsider). So 10,000 views is a huge breakout for one account and a quiet day for another. The tables below show what normal looks like at each size on both platforms.

Is there an official number of views for a video to be viral?

No. TikTok's and Instagram's own explanations of how they recommend videos don't give a view count for "viral."

What they describe is a process. Instagram says every piece of eligible content "is shown to a small audience that we think will enjoy it, regardless of whether they follow the account that posted it or not," and as that audience engages, the best performers are "shown to a slightly wider audience, then the best of these are shown to an even wider group and so on" (Instagram). A viral video is one that keeps passing those tests.

TikTok goes further on account size. Its newsroom says "neither follower count nor whether the account has had previous high-performing videos are direct factors in the recommendation system" (TikTok). A small account can reach millions. It just has to earn each round of distribution first.

How many views does a normal TikTok get?

Far fewer than the For You feed makes it look. Socialinsider, a social media analytics company, studied 2 million TikTok videos from 214,507 accounts posted in 2024 and 2025 (Socialinsider, April 2026). Average views per video in 2025:

Followers Average views per video
1,000 to 5,000 350
5,000 to 10,000 945
10,000 to 50,000 3,240
50,000 to 100,000 9,900
100,000 to 1 million 34,900

Small accounts got noticeably less than a year earlier, too. The same study puts 2024's average for 1,000 to 5,000 followers at 860 views.

These are averages, and the occasional hit raises an average, so the typical video on each account usually gets less than the number in the table. Socialinsider's samples lean toward brand and business accounts, so treat the figures as a rough reference for creators, not a rule.

How many views does a normal Instagram Reel get?

Even fewer, at the small end. Socialinsider's 2026 Instagram benchmarks cover 35 million posts from 447,613 accounts during 2025 (Socialinsider, February 2026). Average views per Reel:

Followers Average views per Reel
1,000 to 5,000 580
5,000 to 10,000 1,000
10,000 to 50,000 2,460
50,000 to 100,000 6,095
100,000 to 1 million 16,035

Another way to read the same thing is as a share of followers. Socialinsider's earlier benchmarks, built from brand accounts, found Reels views equal to about 20% of followers for accounts under 5,000 followers, falling to about 4% for the largest accounts, over 100,000 followers (Socialinsider, data from 2023 and 2024). Bigger accounts get more views in total and a smaller share of their audience on each Reel.

So how many views is viral for your account?

Measure it against your own normal, not against anyone else's numbers. Take the median views of your last 30 to 50 videos, then compare each new video with it. This is the same scale behind ViewRank's outlier score.

Views compared with your median What it means
Under 2x A normal result, good or bad
2x to 5x An outlier. Something in this video worked, so study it
5x to 10x Viral for your account
Over 10x Viral by anyone's measure for your size

Two quick examples. A creator with 3,000 followers and a median of 400 views has gone viral at around 2,000 to 4,000 views. A creator with 500,000 followers and a median of 30,000 needs 150,000 to 300,000 for the same result.

If you'd rather work from the tables above, multiply your size band's average by five. That puts "viral" at roughly 1,750 views for a TikTok account with 1,000 to 5,000 followers, about 16,000 for one with 10,000 to 50,000, and about 175,000 for one with 100,000 to 1 million. On Instagram, the same sum gives about 2,900, 12,300 and 80,000 views for those sizes. That's our arithmetic on Socialinsider's averages, not a platform rule, but it's a fair yardstick when you don't know an account's own median yet.

The same test works on other people's videos, and that's where it pays off. On a growing account, the most viewed videos are mostly the ones posted after it grew. The video at 8x its median is the one that taught the creator something, and it can teach you the same thing.

How long does it take for a TikTok or Reel to go viral?

Most of a video's views arrive in its first week or so. Metricool's 2026 study of 2.31 million TikTok posts found they collect 96% of their total reach and nearly 98% of their interactions within the first 10 days (Metricool, May 2026). We couldn't find a comparable public study for Instagram Reels.

That's why judging a video on its first day misleads you. Early numbers are still moving, and a slow first day doesn't mean a video has failed. ViewRank's tracker waits until a video is 48 hours old before it judges it against the creator's normal, and keeps updating the numbers for a while after it flags one, because a video that pops is usually still climbing.

Do views from non-followers matter more?

They're what "viral" is made of. A video can only go far beyond an account's normal by reaching people who don't follow it, and both platforms now send a large share of views that way, more than half on TikTok.

On TikTok, Metricool found the For You feed drives 72.7% of video views (Metricool). Dash Social, which studied thousands of brand accounts, found that views from non-followers on Instagram rose from 30% in 2024 to 49% in 2025, and that TikTok views from the For You feed rose from 31% in 2023 to 58% by the end of 2025 (Dash Social, February 2026).

Instagram's own ranking explainer says that for Reels "the majority of what you see is from accounts you don't follow" (Instagram). If your views are mostly from followers, a video hasn't gone viral, however good the number looks.

How do you find the videos going viral in your niche?

Use the same relative test on the creators you compete with, and you'll find the formats that are working right now.

The free ViewRank Chrome extension does it on any public Instagram or TikTok profile. Rank the profile, switch to Outliers, and every video is scored against that creator's normal, with a green badge on anything at 2x or more. The account's average and median views are one click away, so you always know the baseline.

FAQ

Is 1,000 views on TikTok viral?

For a small account, it can be. Accounts with 1,000 to 5,000 followers averaged about 350 views per video in 2025, so 1,000 views is nearly three times that. It's a breakout for that account, not viral in the wider sense.

Is 10,000 views viral on Instagram Reels?

It depends on the account. For an account with a few thousand followers, whose Reels average under 1,000 views, 10,000 is clearly viral. For an account with 100,000 followers or more, it's a normal day.

Is 100,000 views viral?

For most accounts, yes. In the Socialinsider studies above, even accounts with 100,000 to 1 million followers averaged far less than 100,000 views. For the biggest creators, with millions of followers, it can be below their normal.

How do you know if your video is going viral?

Compare it with the median views of your last 30 to 50 videos after it's been up for two or three days. At 5x your median or more, it's viral for your account. A quick rise in views from people who don't follow you is the other sign, and you can see that split in your own Insights or TikTok analytics.

Can a video go viral after a few days?

It can keep growing for days, and a slow first day doesn't mean it failed. Most TikToks collect nearly all their reach in the first 10 days, though, so a video that's still flat after a week is unlikely to take off.

How many views is viral on YouTube Shorts?

YouTube doesn't set a number either, and the same test works. Compare a Short with the median views of the channel's recent Shorts, and treat 5x or more as viral for that channel. In ViewRank AI you can import any Short by its link, transcribe it, and see why it worked scene by scene.

Does follower count affect whether a video goes viral?

On TikTok, the company says follower count isn't a direct factor in recommendations. On Instagram, the number of followers is one of the signals considered for Reels. On both, small accounts can and do go viral, and a breakout is easier to spot on a small account because its normal is low.
