0:00When I published my book, Buyback Your Time, I didn't expect anybody to buy it. I remember my publisher, I asked them how many books would you be happy if I sold in the first few weeks, they said like 2, 3, 4,000 copies. And I remember saying, "I don't know that many people." Okay? And then I felt guilty cuz they gave me like I think it was like $350,000
0:22to write this book. And I was I was freaking out. And what happened, and I will walk you through the process, is exactly how I sold 20,000 copies in my first week. It was wild. Okay? And it took a team, and there was a strategy, and I'll break it down. Okay? Which is completely different how I'm doing my next book because back then Dan
0:48had 70,000 followers on social media. Today I have 15, almost 16 million. So for me to tell you what I'm doing for my next book, which is coming up in a few months, not not transferable. Going back to nobody knows who Dan World is, three I mean, literally 4 years ago, wasn't even that long ago. Here's Here's what I did,
1:07okay? First off, I realized there's three strategies when I talked to all my friends. I'm I'm friends with literally the coolest dudes who've written New York Times best-selling books, sold millions of copies, like Hal Elrod from Morning Miracle, um you know, Tim Ferriss, like all all the people, right? Uh Uh Yeah, all the guys. Mark Manson, and you name it. I've been fortunate enough to meet them over the years cuz of my software background, they usually get involved in some software stuff, I get
1:35the call. One, I need to sell bulk copies. Bulk. Bulk copies, uh Gary V, same thing. I called Gary, this is He's like, "Hey, man, do this." So essentially what you do is you figure out what people want, and then you try to give it to them, and all they got to do in return is buy bulk copies, okay? So what you do is you have different packages. 10, 100,
2:02I think I even had a 250. Essentially, I don't know what it was. Let's call it 3K, 5K, maybe more 10K, and then I had I think I had a 50K option, okay? And what I did is I created the packages. I tested them by messaging people. I literally messaged like "How did you do it, Dan? Did you
2:26automate it?" Nope. I sent messages. No automation. Dan Martell, thumbs. "Hey man, how's it going?" Great. "Hey, I got a new book coming out." "Hey, congrats." "Hey, any chance I could get your support in getting it out there?" "Yeah, I'd love to support. How can I support?" "Well, I've got different options. You pick." They're like, "What? 10 grand?" But what I would do is like I think it was like this one was a virtual keynote. This one was an in-person keynote. This one was a two-day mastermind and dinner at my house, as an example, right? So, what I did is I think I pre-sold 5,000 copies
3:06of the book this way. Cuz I I felt I had a publisher that was like, "Hey, bro, you got to sell some copies." The other one is So, that's one. Two is I did a podcast tour. I got this from my buddy Joey Coleman, okay? A podcast tour was I mean, it's a book tour, but you just do it on podcast. And I know that you're going to be like, "Well, how do I get on the podcast?" You got a message. You got to You got to reach out. And it This was
3:35a spreadsheet. This was a bunch of introductions, right? Like you you got to I had a spreadsheet. It was hand-to-hand combat, okay? And originally, I was going to do 25. I ended up doing over 100. So, 100 plus podcasts that were set to publish on the release date of my book. Lot of work. Lot of work. Probably sold
4:00another 5,000 copies, okay? Then, what I did is I did a live event, okay? Now, what the live event is is I went and recruited some smart friends, okay? And asked them to come speak. And then we had video. This is the video that was playing. And then on the right side, I had
4:21packages. So, essentially, I invited everybody from my email list to the event. It was free. They watched the free event with me and my friends. I moderated. And on the right side, while they were watching the video, was all the packages that they could buy, okay? One copy plus a digital copy. Two copies plus the audiobook. You got to
4:42create You got to create the packages. Does that make sense? But, I call them marketing packages and sales packages. Marketing and sales. Sales is really anything above 3K. So, marketing packages anybody could buy. And on the same package, I had sales packages. And what I usually get them to do is just like purchase or opt-in. Somebody on my team will call them and just be like, "Hey, let's talk." And they would try to sell them the next level. And they were the same They were directionally speaking the
5:09same packages as these. And that strategy is how I sold 20,000 copies in the first I think it was almost the first week. We It was a Wall Street Journal best-seller. It would have been number one best-seller if it wasn't for Mr. Atomic Habit, James. Um which I still have the text message where I thought I was going to get him. And I [ __ ] texted him. And I was like, "I'm coming for you." And he said, "Bring
5:34it." It's [clears throat] kind of stupid because [laughter] that book continues Yeah, well, just like the book continuously, organically sells 18,000 copies a week. Yeah, and it's been out for 7 years. In in the literal in literary world, it's considered a unicorn. So, but I thought, you know, it was fun. That's That's how I sold 20,000 copies. And um the good news is, if you're part of Elite AI, you get access to the whole
