0:00We've got a problem. And I know you've got the problem, I've got the problem, [music] we've all got this problem. AI video slop is everywhere. Not a day goes by where I don't have like my parents or like one of my friends or they my producer sending me a video saying, "Hey, look at this cool thing that somebody just invented." [music] And I watch the video, I go, "Dude, that is not real. Like seriously, you thought that was real?" And I'll be honest, I've been fooled. Like I get videos and I'll watch it like two or three times before my brain [music] clicks like, "Wait a
0:35second, I think that might be an AI video." And you know what? I don't want to deal with that anymore. I want to make something that if somebody's going to send me a video, I'll say, "Hey, go to this place first, plug in the link you're about to send me, and if it says it's AI, you know, you don't have to send it to me." So, to [music] solve this problem, I'm going to try to make an AI slop detector. A simple website where when you see a link on Instagram or TikToker, YouTuber, one of these places, you take that link, you put the URL in the site, and it'll tell you if
1:06you're seeing an AI video or not. I'm sure other people have done this. It seems like a pretty good idea to have, but I haven't come across one yet that's actually decent. So, I'm going to try to make it. And to do that, my first step is to go over to ChatGPT and try to figure out if it's even possible. So, I spoke out this long prompt here, basically giving it my idea. I have an app idea that I want to create, but I want to figure out the viability. Please help me think through how to actually make this happen. Now, I am personally familiar with existing things that are
1:39designed to help detect AI video. Like Google has a thing called SynthID. So, if I run it through SynthID, it'll tell us if it's a video that one of Google's platforms made. It won't tell us definitively if it's AI or not, but if it was made with Google's AI, it should theoretically tell us that. The Gemini models from Google are also one of the only models that are really good at looking at video and actually having an understanding of that video. So, I said we can use the Gemini models. So again, I talked out the idea and then I sort of let it know what I know exists to see if
2:15we can create this. In fact, Google just rolled out a brand new version of their video understanding in September. So, I mean, apparently the new capability improves accuracy. So, we can use that as part of the workflow as well. So, it took ChatGPT 17 minutes to figure out if this was actually viable or not. And for the most part, it said like, "Yeah, you could do this, but it's not going to be 100% accurate. So, don't let people think that it's perfect every single time." Which, you know, that's good enough for me. Let's go ahead and try to build the thing. So, I'm going to use
2:47ChatGPT and their models to build it. And so, I want to switch to coding. I'm in the ChatGPT app here. We'll switch over to Codex, cuz that's where we're going to do coding. I'm going to come down to projects. We'll create a new project. I'll create a new folder on my computer. We'll call it AI Slop Detector
3:02and we'll give it access to that folder. Now, I'm kind of lazy, so I'll jump back to the chat here, click on share, and we'll copy the link to this actual chat, jump back into our Codex project, and I'll tell it I want to build this AI Slop Detector app, and I want to be able
3:17to publish it online for others to use. And then I just link to that chat that I just copied. Read our previous chat to get all the details and the map out the plan. I also mentioned I want to use the new Gemini agentic understanding model as part of the process to detect the AI slop. And well, I linked it right over
3:33to that article we were just looking at. And an hour and 16 minutes later, we supposedly have something usable. Okay, so here's what it gave back. Man, AI is really bad at writing [laughter] copy. Check it before you share it. We We evidence. We do not certify reality. Paste the weird video your uncle sent.
3:55How do you do, fellow kids? What? Gemini inspects the footage, we check the evidence, and you get a verdict with receipts. And then, doubt here, what did they send? This where we plug in the URL. Says it works with YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, X, or you can upload a clip. See a sample report. Okay, so probably AI with a confidence rating. Okay, so that's what a report will look like. All right. I've actually been saving clips that I come across that are AI that some people seem to think are real. And so, yeah, they're in my dashboard here. Let me grab one that's fairly obvious. Like this Fart Zooka. So, here's the clip, a
4:30lady wearing like a sort of inflated suit with a jetpack on it that they call Fart Zooka. She flattens down in the water and then, you know, starts jetting across the water in her, you know, inflatable fat suit thing. Clearly AI. Let's see if our detector can figure it out. We'll plug in our URL here. Scan this video. All right. So, it determined
4:54that the Fart Zooka was probably not AI. Uh not off to a great start here. Oh man. Let's see uh what looks suspicious. 4 seconds, "Assimilated particle emitter effect produces rigid white spray from the rear nozzle of the suit, characteristics of traditional CGI VFX rather than generative AI." It didn't find any content credentials and it gave
5:18it a high confidence rating. [laughter] Oh boy. We got some work to do. So, I'll jump back into ChatGPT here and this last one I was actually using GPT 5.6 Soul Ultra. And since that version, we actually got a new model. So, I'm actually going to create a new chat here and we're going to use the new GPT-6
5:39Astra model. All right. All right. So, it uh worked for 5 minutes and 40 seconds here. I would not trust the current high confidence labels. You think? I [laughter] found reproducible problems in the verdict logic plus gaps in how the detection quality is evaluated. The main findings, high confidence is assigned automatically from Gemini's number. Anything at or below 15 gets a high confidence. App can override an inconclusive assessment. WHO GIVES A
6:07OH. OH. [screaming] LET'S JUST SEE HOW good Astra is at this. Go ahead and build out your recommended changes to make our AI slop detector actually work. Make no mistakes. I'll go ahead and add the {slash} goal to it cuz then that that'll just make it like keep on running and like testing itself until it figures it out. And I'm just going to do the thing and see if this gets us [laughter] where we want to
6:34go. Lay down. Okay, so that took a couple more minutes. And by a couple more minutes, I mean over eight hours later. It created four different documents for me, ran a whole bunch of tests to see if it could get it working. And at the end of all of those eight plus hours, it actually says goal stalled. So [laughter] it didn't even finish yet. I'm not even recording this on the same day. Essentially, what it came to was I need to go and use this API Site Engine's $29 a month actually is, you can tell what's going on in the videos, but also down here we can see that it
7:13could detect if something is AI generated. So yeah, an API that literally does what I made this whole video to do. But screw it. I've come this far, so I'm going to go ahead and sign up for this API and see if we can get this thing working. Okay, so free tier gets me 2,000 operations a month, basic content moderation and AI detection. But it doesn't get me video processing. So I don't think this free trial is going to work here. Okay, so I
7:39went ahead and signed up for a pay plan. Let's go ahead and grab an API key here. Now, our API key needs to go into something called the environment variables file. So, I want it to sort of prep the environment variables file for me. I don't need it on Astra Ultra for this, so I'm just going to bring this all the way down to like light. So, I'll let that set up for me real quick, then I can copy and paste my keys into that
8:02file. Cool. That took about 20 seconds. All right, so it created this little section down here with Site Engine API user, Site Engine API secret. So, I just need to copy and paste the stuff right here. So, I'll copy my API user here. We'll paste that in, and then we'll copy our API secret here, paste that in, and then save our environment variables, and cool. So, that file has now been updated. I'm going to jump back up to our Astra Ultra and tell it Site Engine API is now set up. Please continue to pursue the goal. Hopefully, this isn't another 8 hours. What's really interesting about this is that it's
8:40actually running its own tests. So, looking through some of the chat logs here, the detector put in 39 AI clips, and it detected 23 out of the 39 properly, and it falsely flagged two out of 36 real clips. And as we scroll through some of the chat logs here, still isn't reliable enough to trust. So, it tested a few more things, still not reliable enough to call it fixed, tested a few more things, and we could just like scroll through and see that it just kept on testing itself over and
9:09over again going, nope, not good enough. Nope, not good enough until it finally came to the conclusion, let's [laughter] use a different tool that already does this. So, I'm going to let this run for a few minutes and see if we get something that's actually working, even though we're now using somebody else's tool that they built to do this same thing, and just using an API. But at the end of the day, the result should be the same. So, it's been 1 hour and 50 minutes since that last prompt they gave here. It did ask me to share an Instagram reel so it can test it. And
9:41SiteEngine is integrated and I tested your exact reel, it flagged 19 of 23 sampled positions and Gemini found no clear AI indicators. So, the app now shows inconclusive with the disagreement visible without unsupported HIGH CONFIDENCE. NO, GOD, PLEASE, NO. SO, AFTER all of that, you know, 10 hours of prompting, I can still give it an AI video that I, as a human, can clearly tell is AI and it still tells me it's inconclusive. So, let's refresh our AI slop detector here, grab the link to our AI farts bazooka video that anybody with a brain knows is AI, paste it into our slop detectormarator here, and scan this video. And after like a
10:25minute, we get inconclusive. I don't feel like I'm any closer than I was when I started this like multiple days ago. SiteEngine detected repeated AI indicators in 19 sampled frames across three stretches of this video. Gemini found no clear indicators in the same media. It seems to me like this API that I plugged in for SiteEngine accurately determined that it was AI, but because it also ran it through Gemini and Gemini found that it's not AI, they disagreed and it found it inconclusive. Let's see what happens when I give it like a video that we know is not AI. So, I'll go to my friend Kat GPT's channel here and
11:06let's just grab a random video where she's just like talking to the camera. I've always said that deep fakes are the absolute worst case scenario of how we apply generative AI on I mean, a pretty relevant video to what we're talking about, too. So, let's go ahead and take this URL, pop it into our detector, and see what it finds cuz this one's clearly not AI. It's just somebody talking to camera. And it's inconclusive. Okay, [laughter] this is annoying here. Let's see. The observations do not support a consistent conclusion about AI generation or manipulation. And it says the specialist scan currently supports clips shorter than 1 minute and up to 50 megabytes,
11:38which is not true. I think that's just a limitation that the code put on itself. I didn't give it that limitation. All right, so I need to go and uh let's give it one more prompt here. Hopefully we kind of land on something that's workable. I'm going to take it off ultra mode cuz that just seems to be running for far too long and I don't think it
11:57needs to process as long as it has been. All right, hopefully this gets us there. I'm like this close to giving up on this damn thing. Okay, so after another 31 minutes, it should be able to process longer videos and our site engine takes priority because that one seems to be better at actually detecting AI. Cool, let's try this again. I'll try with our Cat GPT video one more time. Paste this in, scan this one. Okay, I think we're
12:22onto something. No clear AI indicators. That is good. No reliable evidence of AI found on a video that was definitely not AI. So, no flags in sampled frames. What argues against AI? Consistent object permanence, natural eye contact, acoustically realistic speech and timing. Awesome. Okay, now we have to give it an AI video and hopefully it does determine that it's AI. So, might
12:46as well test our Fart Zooka video again. AI indicators. Nice. Coming along. Okay, repeated AI indicators found. So, it didn't find content credentials. We could see Gemini didn't find any visual indicators or audio indicators. So, it doesn't necessarily tell us why it thinks it's AI, but all these orange markers are things that it decided were
13:11AI. So, let's pull in another video. We've got this video of a crane dropping an airplane into a hole. And I mean this dude is taller than the airplane at this point and then now he's all of a sudden miniature and like can walk around inside the airplane, but earlier he was taller than the airplane. So, I mean, clearly AI. And this one's on X, so this will help us determine if it can watch X videos as well. So, let's go ahead and copy this URL, plug it into our box here, scan the video. Ooh, okay. AI indicators detected. So, yeah, once again, it determined that it was likely
13:48AI. Again, it's this site engine that seems to be pretty decent at determining if it's AI, but it also doesn't seem to like tell us why it thinks it's AI. It's just like, all right, at all these markers we think we spotted something that was AI. And well, Gemini's visual review just kind of sucks. But, the that site engine tool that we connected to it here does seem to figure it out. Let's look at our usage, actually. All right,
14:12apparently we've used 11,040 operations. And I've already used a fourth. That's That's horrible. That's That just sucks. All right, but our AI detector [laughter] is kind of working. I really hate the design, though. I'm actually going to say, go make this a minimalist design. All right. [laughter] Now, it's just a clean, simple paste link, upload video. Uh yeah. So, let's
14:33go ahead and grab one last link here. This is another video that is pretty clearly AI generated. Uh so, let's go ahead and copy this link, toss it into our new improved minimalist detector, and let's scan our video. All right, AI indicators detected. But, again, it doesn't really tell you what it sees. It just tells you like at these moments it's probably AI. Let's see. Gemini,
14:57once again, no clear visual indicators. So, Gemini not good at detecting AI sources and credentials. So, there's no content credentials identified. So, they didn't like tag it as AI. But, overall, it pretty much says, yeah, it's probably an AI video. So, that's perfect. Let's try it one more time with a non-AI video. I'll grab a video from another one of my friends, Tiffany Jenkins,
15:19here. I'll go ahead and grab this URL. Let's toss this one into you the Slop Detector here. No clear AI indicators. Yes. Okay. So, Site Engine didn't find anything throughout the video that it thought was AI. Of course, Gemini didn't find anything, but Gemini never finds anything. So, it appears to be working pretty well now. So, here's the thing. My goal with this video was to build this AI Slop Detector and then put it online so that anybody can copy any URL in, paste it in, and double-check if it was slop or not. Unfortunately, that's not like financially feasible cuz it needs to use that Site Engine API
16:00to test if something is actually AI or not. And at the $100 a month plan, I only get 40 operations, and I have no clue what counts as an operation. But just in my testing, I've already used 12,150 operations, and I've only run like six videos through this. The last few videos I ran through it, like this is the most recent one, it used 440 operations. So, I just have like no way of tracking this and knowing how many operations are going to be potentially used. So, I really can't like put this online and
16:34let just like anybody run wild with it. But what I can do is I can put all the code of everything that I have built here up on GitHub. You can download it and run it locally and connect your own Site Engine API if you want and run it if that's valuable to you. Now, something I've been thinking about a lot lately is we've had multiple people
16:53claim that we've officially hit AGI. Like Jensen Huang said that AGI has arrived. OpenAI claims that AGI era is here. AGI sort of means that you have an AI that is as smart as any human at pretty much anything a human could do. One of the reasons I'm not buying the we're in AGI narrative is this. AI still really sucks at determining when something is AI, right? If AGI is supposed to be as good as a human at like pretty much everything a human could do, why is it so bad at telling me something is AI when me as a human can
17:32pretty easily tell when something's AI. Why can't an AI do that if we're in AGI? Gemini's like the only model we've got right now that can actually watch videos and tell us what's going on in it and it can't tell when something is AI. If you feed a link to Astra or Anthropic's Fable 5.1, you feed a video link or an image link that's clearly AI to your eyes to one of those models and say tell me is this AI or not, it'll tell you
17:56it's inconclusive and it can't tell. These are supposed to be the best models. These are supposed to be AGI. That's why I'm not buying the AGI is here narrative, at least not like what we have publicly available. We as consumers don't get the most powerful models ever. Now, I do understand the the narrative that there's also this like cat and mouse game where if an AI gets really good at determining if something is AI, then the models will get better at making things harder to detect that they're actually AI and this cycle will continue. But right now, they're just kind of bad across the board at this. My AI detector is getting
18:31me closer to being able to do this, but it's using a third-party API called Site Engine. And while Site Engine is using an AI, it's using like some sort of computer vision model, it's not using the new like LLM sort of generative AI models that these companies are claiming are AGI. Anyway, at the end of the day, I did manage to get an AI slop detector working. Unfortunately, I don't know how to give everybody access without just like sharing it on GitHub and saying you can use it, but you need to bring your own API keys. But hey, I got something that's kind of working. So now, whenever
19:06Dave sends me that random video and tells me to check it out, I can You like Dave, are you serious? Come on. That's what AI slop detector's for. Anyway, I had a lot of fun building this even though it's not quite the end result I was hoping for. But if you like cool tech and you like nerding out about AI stuff, maybe consider liking and subscribing to this channel. I drink from the firehose all week. I keep up with all the latest AI news, all the latest AI tools. I test the stuff. I have conversations with the people inside the labs. I am constantly consuming it all and overwhelming myself
19:35with all the latest and greatest AI tech so that you don't have to. And then I make videos like this and my Friday AI news breakdowns where I break down everything you need to know that happened in the world of AI for this week in just one video per week. Again, if that's something that interests you, make sure you like this video and subscribe to this channel. It'll make sure you're always looped in on all of the latest happening in AI. Thank you so much for hanging out with me and nerding out with me in this one. It's been a lot of fun. Again, not the result I wanted,
20:02but uh I got a result. I I I kind of got where I wanted to go. But that's what I got for you. All right. I Yeah, I don't know how to end this video. So
