https://viewrankai.com/tools/youtube-transcript/N0EsdJUrbF4 --- [0:00] if you're just getting into design and you're considering which one should i be should i help business with their branding or should i build websites for business which one is more interesting which one is more fun which one is more profitable well in this video we're going to talk about the differences between branding and web design and help you make a decision on how to go forward [Music] hey designer friends what is up my name is ron segal and welcome to flux if this is your first time here welcome this is the best place on youtube to learn about how to become a designer and make a [0:32] living as a designer and today i want to dive into the question and explain the differences between branding and web design and help you understand which one you want to invest in becoming an expert in so i want to break this down into four different things that i want to cover first of all i want to talk about the difference between them like what is actually the difference between them then i'm going to talk about which one is more interesting and which one should maybe you are leaning towards more and then the third thing i want to talk about which one of them is more profitable where can you make more money [1:04] and lastly i want to talk about how to make a decision if you should focus on one of them so let's get started with the difference between them first of all branding what is branding well in branding basically what we're trying to do as designers is to figure out who is the client what is the essence of their client what is their strategy what they're trying to do with their business and with their marketing and basically translate all of these ideas into a visual visual identity so that when people can interact with this brand they're going to feel all of these things that the business wants to [1:39] communicate right so as part of our job once we clarify all that we will make the decisions about how the brand is going to look like in terms of colors in terms of typography in terms of the tone of voice and the look and feel and we're going to make all of these decisions about the visual side in the imagery yes it's we're also going to tackle things like the logo but basically make a decision about how the brand should look and feel like when interacting with now when it comes to website website is basically just one application of how the brand should look like meaning when [2:12] you're going to design a website you're going to have to understand to begin with even before you start building it what are all of these strategic things that we're trying to achieve with the brand how do people want to you know feel and and you know how is it going to look like so basically you can only do a website after you have answered the branding question because even if you don't answer these questions a website will use typography and colors and some kind of a logo or something like this and will convey a look and feel so whether you have made these decisions you know [2:46] coherently or you're just winging it basically a website is no matter what you do an application of a branding and so the if you're we're talking about the process over or some kind of a hierarchy we always have a branding first and then a website as an application of it but a website versus uh web design has other functions right it has other goals when we're designing a website we're trying to convey some sort of information we're trying to tackle a specific product problem in terms of we're either trying to get people to purchase register trying to teach them or educate them about the product or service and help [3:28] them make a choice about this so a website has a much more functional problems that we need to tackle whereas branding were basically the main task for us for designers is to translate this strategy into visuals in a website our mission as designers is to translate those actual goals that you know the the business has for the website translate them into an information architecture into a structure into a wireframe into a content that will help users achieve those goals so these are basically two different design challenges and that leads me into the second part of this discussion which one is more interesting well the truth is i [4:12] basically find both of them interesting but i find that different people who have kind of like different orientations might find one of these projects more appealing than the other ones so people who are more oriented into conveying feelings and ideas through visuals right understanding how can we make somebody feel something how can we make somebody feel happy how can we make somebody feel proud how can we make something look premium people who love those challenges would love to take branding projects because there we have these understanding of how can we create this very unique combination of colors graphical elements typography to convey this kind of a message people who [5:01] are leaning more towards web design are people sometimes they are more a little bit analytical right because here we have a more analytical challenge of how can we take all of these information how can we structure it in a way that will make sense and be logical for the user so they can achieve their goal you know if you think about the the brain i don't know if you're familiar with the right side of the brain and the left side of the brain where the uh right side of the brain is more kind of like creative feeling uh kind of thing where the and the left [5:34] side of the brain is more like logical uh words mathematics that kind of things so i would maybe split branding and website although they both need both sides of the brain i would put the branding on the more right side of the brain and websites more on the left side of the brain okay let's talk about money which one of these projects is more profitable and the truth is both of them can be profitable based on who the client is and how complex the project can be now it might be intuitively you might think well websites are more complex website a lot of times can actually be a key driver for revenue [6:21] especially if you're making sales so clients are more inclined to pay more for it and sometimes that might be true right website can have a lot of pages can have a lot of underlying technologies for them and that makes them complex and sometimes that make them more expensive and clients will pay more for a website that being said because those websites might be more complex they also might involve more work and therefore the fact that you're making more money doesn't mean that you're being left with less with more profit right on the other side with branding a lot of as companies become bigger and they become more complex the actual [7:01] problem in branding is not the challenge of how do we convey that strategy in you know colors and visuals and look and feel that is a problem that most designers or a lot of designers who become professional can solve but the really the big challenge here is to get a bunch of people who are the management the founders to agree on these solutions because as i said branding touches a lot on the emotional side of things and so people immediately react i love this logo i hate this logo my wife doesn't like green our customers doesn't like blue so it always becomes the discussion becomes very very emotional and so what it takes [7:44] for a designer that takes on bigger projects more complex and more potentially profitable project is a designer who can facilitate and explain the design process and explain the reasoning for going with a certain solution when when you can get the client to agree to actually say yes to a project or to a certain creative direction that's when projects become very very valuable and you know there are companies who are paying hundreds of thousands if not half a million for branding projects because again these are great creative people who are not only amazing at doing creative work but they're also great salesmen in the sense that they can get the client to [8:29] agree to implement that decision so again one of these projects website projects can become more profitable as they become more complex and a lot of times technically complex branding projects can become more profitable as you learn how to work with people and how to facilitate decision making with big and complex situations all right so that drives us to the last question which is which one should you focus on should you become an expert in one should you try to do both well as i said i'm personally passionate about both of them and i also think that it makes sense for designers to master at least to some degree both of these skills [9:13] because so many times they actually go together right when a new company is formed they obviously need a branding and then one of the first applications that they will have is all right now we need to have a website that's based on the branding decision that we have made so usually one project leads to another when you have a web design project as i said a lot of times in in any case a website is an application of the branding and a lot of times client would come to you with we need a website and then you would ask them about their current branding or assets that [9:45] they have to work with and you will find out that they don't have a clear brand strategy they don't have a clear color palette or typography or logo to work with which means that you're going to have to do this branding project before you get started on the website project and so it makes sense to tackle them both together but as i said a lot of people i do encourage you to experiment a little bit with both of them and then see if you want to dive deeper into both of them or maybe figure out well i'm more into this left side of the brain websites [10:17] analytical technical projects or i'm more into the more creative visually feeling kind of project and figure out which one is more appealing to you both of them are fantastic fantastic ways both to do something creative challenging and super super valuable for your clients and also a great way to make a living as a creative person i hope this video was helpful for you if so like this video and let me know in the comments which one you're going to focus on and i'll see you on the next video peace out [Music] you --- About this transcript Read from
