# The Leadership Rule Most People Refuse To Follow. Jocko Willink. Channel: Jocko Podcast Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gr6BivYjur8 Duration: 10 min Language: English Words: 1826 Transcript page: https://viewrankai.com/tools/youtube-transcript/Gr6BivYjur8 --- [0:00] Seek responsibility and take responsibility for your actions. I think there's a book about that. Yeah, I hear good things. You are responsible for all that your unit does or fails to do. You are responsible for the decision and its application regardless of your subordinate's actions. You must issue all orders in your name, stick by your convictions, and do what you think is right, but accept justified [0:26] criticism. Never remove or demote a subordinate for a failure resulting from your own mistake. It's important. And just remember, stick by your convictions doesn't mean keep doing the same thing when it's not working. [laughter] Learn the duties of your immediate senior. Be prepared to accept responsibilities for these duties. Take every opportunity that offers increased [0:50] responsibility. That's a rough one. Perform every act, large or small, to the best of your ability. Stand up for what you believe is right. Have the courage of your convictions. That doesn't mean close your mind. That doesn't mean don't listen to people. In fact, I would add a caveat. Try and understand other people's perspectives. Cuz what you believe is right might not [1:13] be right. Carefully evaluate a subordinate's failure before taking action. Ensure that the apparent shortcomings are not due to an error on your part. They probably are. They work for you. You're the boss. Take ownership. Consider Marines that are available. Salvage one if possible, replace when necessary. You don't always You don't always just get a new Marine. In the SEAL platoon, you fire a SEAL, you're probably not getting a replacement. Sometimes you do, sometimes [1:40] you don't. Can't count on it. In the absence of orders, take the initiative and to perform the actions that you believe your senior would direct you to perform if you were present. And then closing it out, here's the summary. These leadership principles are proven guidelines, which, if followed, will substantially enhance your ability to lead Marines. Remember, by implementing these principles, you will earn the respect of your fellow Marines, juniors and seniors, and you will become an effective commander. So, [2:11] there you go. Anything we have not heard before? I don't really think so. I don't really think so. Why do we need to keep hearing it over and over again? That's the question. The answer to that is cuz it's against our instincts. Our instincts are telling us to do the opposite. [clears throat] Blame other people. Work in silos. That's what That's what our instincts [2:32] are telling us to do. Leadership is counterintuitive. So, we have to pay attention. It's good guide This is a little guidebook. Kind of let you know, little reminders. To Reminder to to pay attention and do what you're supposed to do. Not what you want to do. Not what feels good. Not what seems right. Not what you can convince yourself of. Not what you can uh debate with yourself about. Not what you [3:01] can rationalize. Do what you're supposed to do. Do what you're supposed to do. That's how we're leading. Also part of leadership, we heard it a couple times today, physical fitness. Man, you got to be physically fit. Should be your number one strategic goal in your life. Does that sound crazy? To me that does not sound crazy now. one strategic goal of your life should be to be [3:29] healthy as you can. Needs to be. Cuz once we lose that, now look, does that mean that every season of your life it's going to be the number one thing? Nope, there might be 3 weeks where, you know, work is consuming or kid gets sick or there's something you got to do. I mean, I I got a friend that had a very [3:48] sick daughter. And he like physically he wasn't able to do anything for months. He was explaining to me it's like awful. But that's what you do. You know, you take care of family. So, are there going to be seasons? Yep. Where the strategic priority becomes taking care of your daughter? Yeah, absolutely. As soon as you get through that [4:08] guess what? Get back on the path. You got to get back on the path.
