# How to Get Your Emails Out of Spam (Klaviyo Email Deliverability) Channel: Emiel Dingemans | eCommerce Retention Marketing Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMPvLyGiHgM Duration: 12 min Language: English Words: 2467 Transcript page: https://viewrankai.com/tools/youtube-transcript/GMPvLyGiHgM --- [0:00] If your emails are landing in the spam folder, you're simply throwing money away because you can write the best emails in the world, but if nobody sees them, your ecom sales just freeze. So, in this video, I'm going to show you exactly how to get your emails out of the spam folder and back into the primary inbox so you can get open rates like these. And I'll tell you up front, the fix is probably not the thing that you think it is. And most ecom brands run straight to the subject lines and their design. And that's just the one part that barely moves Neil here. The [0:31] real reasons are somewhere else and I'll walk you through them right now in this video. And in case you're new here, my name is Emil and I run an email and SMS marketing agency for e-commerce brands called Magician. Over the last seven years, we've generated over $300 million in sales for over 150 ecom brands. And we have a stack of five-star trust pilot reviews like these ones. So, this is the exact stuff we do inside real cla accounts when one of them lands in the [0:58] spam folder. So, let's get into it. First, let's clear up why your emails are going to spam right now. Because most eco brands have the wrong mental model and it sends them chasing the wrong fixes. Here's the thing that people simply get wrong. So, they think landing in spam is a claio problem, like there's a broken setting or a toggle somewhere in their account that's [1:19] quietly sending them to the spam folder. And yeah, that's just not how it work because Clavo's job is just to hand your emails off to the inbox providers like Gmail, Outlook, Apple, and Yahoo. After that, those providers decide where your email will land. And they decide that based on two things. How you behave as a sender and how your subscribers behave when they get your emails. And most of the decision is made before a single human reads a word of your copy. So really, they are judging you on three questions. One, are you a legit consistent sender? Or do you look like someone blasting random lists? Two, do [1:55] people want your emails? So, are they opening, clicking, replying? And three, are you safe and predictable? Or are you all over the place? So, that's the whole game. And notice what's not on that list. So, your subject line, your fancy header image, the text on the CTA button, the typical things that the average ecom brand is worrying about. And one more thing to get straight before we fix anything. Getting out of the spam folder is just the floor. The [2:21] bigger fight is the promotion step. Because here's what most people don't realize. When your email hits someone's primary inbox, their phone buzzes. They get the notification. They see you in the moment. And when your email is land in the promotion tab, none of that happens. So the email just sits in a pile. They might scroll through later, if ever. So spam is the thing that kills you, but the promotion step is the thing that quietly bleeds you. So we're always aiming for the primary inbox, and that's the real challenge right now in 2026. A quick one before we go to the next part of this video. So I've got a free email [2:57] marketing course on my website that breaks down everything about email for e-commerce brands in way more detail. So the deliverability stuff, the flows, all of it, and it gives you step-by-step guides. The link is in description below if you wanted to download it for one option free. Now, let's get back to the video. Okay, fix number one, and this is the one almost nobody is checking, which is your sending pattern. Because inbox providers, they are obsessed with consistency. Think about it from their side. If they see a domain that went quiet for 3 weeks and then suddenly starts blasting every single day, that looks risky, right? If they see a brand [3:35] that normally emails 10,000 people and overnight jumps to 200,000 people, that looks like something got hacked or somebody bought a list. And if they see a brand new domain that's never sent anything suddenly fire off to 100,000 people, that screams spammer. So in all three cases, they get cautious and they start filtering you down and sending your emails to the spam folder. Kind of obvious, right? So here are two simple rules that will keep you safe. First, you don't want to massively spike your volume from one day to the next. So, doubling overnight is just asking for trouble. So, you want to grow your sending up gradually. Second, you don't [4:11] want to go silent and then come back with a flood. So, a steady, predictable rhythm beats a burst every time, even if that steady rhythm means sending a little less. And if you checked some of my other videos on this channel, then you probably know that I typically recommend sending three to four email campaigns a week. But if you can't keep up with that, it's better to stay consistent with just two campaigns a week, for example. Again, consistency is the most important thing. And if you're starting from a bad spot, you just rebuild your email list or your placement has totally tanked. You warm back up. So warming just means that you [4:46] start small and then you ramp up. So for example, you want to send only to your most engaged people first. So the ones that you know will open and you get a few sends in with strong operates under your belt. So the inbox providers they see real humans wanting your email. And then the next step is that you can slowly widen your segments to who you [5:06] send to a bit more every single week. And then you can watch your operates as you go. If your operates hold and you can keep expanding and if they dip, you pull back in and you simply rebuild. So, in essence, you're basically just showing Gmail and Outlook over and over that people are happy to hear from you until they trust you enough to drop you in the primary inbox by default. That's the whole strategy game here. And I already made a full step-by-step course with the exact sequence and the exact weekly plan fully laid out for you on my YouTube channel. So, I'll make sure to [5:37] put a link in the description below if you want to check out that step-by-step guide. This video, I just want to make sure that you understand the moves that actually matter. Now, let's get to fix number two, and this is the silent killer I see wreck cla accounts the most, which is your bounce rate. So, a bounce is just an email that couldn't be delivered. And there are two kinds. So, we have a hard bounce, which means that the address is dead, gone, and never coming back. There's also the soft bounce, which is temporary. So, it could be a full mailbox, a server hiccup, that kind of thing. And here's why you have [6:11] to care. Because when your bounce rate climbs, the inbox providers read it as, "Okay, this sender is emailing addresses that don't exist and they're working off some ancient list. They're not paying attention." And then they don't just punish the bad addresses, they punish your whole email list. So, your good engaged subscribers start landing in spam, too, because of the dead weight you keep emailing. And what most people don't realize is that a bounce problem snowballs fast and it usually has one specific source. So nine times out of 10 it's like a reactivation flow or a wimbeck flow or a sunset flow pointed at a really old still chunk of your email [6:49] list. So you switch that flow on it starts hammering a pile of dead addresses and your bounce is spiked and the damage spread across everything that you sent. So not just that single flow. And we even had a situation with a client before where their debug record was set up and the demark checker was giving a green check mark but it wasn't fully compatible with Hotmail leading to enormous bounce rates just for Hotmail users. So these are always the little things that you have to consistently monitor and you have to like combat as soon as possible before it leads to like bigger problems for your email list and [7:21] your brand. So here's what to do. You want to suppress your hard bounces immediately so you never email those again. For soft bounces, you want to give them a few tries, and if they keep bouncing, you want to suppress them, too, because repeated soft bounces turn into hard bounces anyway. And a little tip, you want to add a simple filter to basically every single email flow that you have that just screens out anyone who has bounced recently. So, a flow can never quietly poison your reputation in the background. And you want to be really careful pointing any reactivation flow at a list that's been sitting untouched for over a year cuz that old [7:54] email list feels like free money to you. But to be honest, nine out of 10 times it's just usually a trap that just causing more issues for you rather than free money. And another tip, you want to regularly check your deliverability stats per campaign and see how the performance per inbox provider is because often times it looks like there are no major issues on the surface. So, for example, the overall bounce rate is pretty low and your op rates are still 50% or higher, but under the surface, you could already identify inbox provider specific issues that could turn into big problems later if you don't notice it early enough, like with the [8:29] Hotmail example that I just gave you. So, now let's get into fix number three. And this is the one that doesn't just get you out of spam, but it gets you into the primary inbox, which is engagement. But the kind you have to engineer on purpose because you already know that of course the opens and the clicks matter. But the most powerful signal there is and the one barely anyone uses on purpose is replies. So when someone replies to your email, the inbox provider sees a real back and forth, a human relationship, and that's exactly what they want to reward with primary placement. So engineer it in [9:04] your welcome flow and in your post purchase flow. The two moments when people are most excited to hear from you, you simply want to ask like a real question and invite them to hit reply. So something simple, what made you check us out or what are you hoping this helps with? So even a small slice of people replying sends a strong trust signal early on right when you're forming your reputation with a subscriber. All in all, you simply ask question to your email subscribers and some of them will answer which will boost your email deliverability. And here's the bigger principle underneath all of it. So you [9:38] want to stop sending to people who aren't engaging. And I know it's tempting to email your whole email list because more people should mean more sales. But every send to someone who ignores you is a vote against you with the inbox providers and it drags down placement for the people who do love you. So you want to send your campaigns to your most engaged people only. So the ones who are showing signs of life and only reach out to the rest maybe once or twice a month. So you can still give the sleepers a chance to wake up again. And past that you simply want to let them [10:08] go. So same idea on the content itself. So send emails people want to open. So not just the prettier ones. because a funny, useful, human email that gets opened and clicked does more for your deliverability than the most beautiful template that gets simply ignored. Now, finally, two quick ones to round this out. First of all, make sure that you've got a branded sending domain set up in your Clave account and that you also have a demarked record in place. And on its own, it won't rescue a major spam problem, but if it's missing or broken, nothing else that you do will stick. And I won't run through the exact clicks [10:44] here since they're in that step-by-step video that I mentioned, but go check that box. And second, if your email list quality is a real mess and you're drowning in junk signups, the strongest fix there is turning on double opt-in. That just means that a new email subscriber has to confirm before they're added to your email list. And yeah, don't get me wrong, it means that fewer people make it on your email list, but the ones who do want to be there. So your engagement jumps and your [11:11] deliverability follows right behind it. So it's the closest thing to a reset button that you've got. And again, don't get me wrong, normally I'm not a big fan of double opt-in, so I wouldn't like highly recommend it in normal situations, but in emergency situation, it could help you recover faster. Now, here's the part I want to be straight with you about. Fixing your spam issues is a great start, but staying in the primary inbox is a daily job, especially again if you want to land in the primary inbox. So your reputation isn't a thing that you just set up once and then you can forget about it because one bad move [11:44] the next week a careless blast to an old list for example or a flow pointed at that addresses and you can undo weeks of progress.
