# How to Stop Losing Things Channel: How to ADHD Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CvODrpfnaA Duration: 5 min Language: English Words: 1142 Transcript page: https://viewrankai.com/tools/youtube-transcript/8CvODrpfnaA --- [0:00] hello brains dang it where's my Oh [Music] also I lost my backdrop those of us with ADHD spend a lot of time looking for things why because we lose things constantly we're often distracted when we put stuff down so we have no recollection of where we put it or we put it down for just a second while we do five other things and then totally forget about it to make things worse our brains have trouble filtering out extraneous stimuli so when we go looking for the thing we see a bunch of other things and get distracted again so those of us who are also impulsive end up starting laundry [0:43] checking email and building a house in Minecraft because it was open before actually finding our keys this by the way is often why we're late some people with ADHD actually compensate for this inner chaos by being incredibly organized ok I'm not one of these people but I did get tired of losing things so I decided to follow my mom's advice have a dedicated place for everything turns out when we know where something goes we can be distracted and still automatically put it where it's supposed to go so we can easily find it again later the end just kidding I wish the truth is this is a lot easier [1:19] said than done when you have ADHD the parts of our brain that benefit from having a place for everything they're these same parts of our brain that make it hard for us to figure out where things should go and then get into the habit of actually putting them there so while having a dedicated place for everything is a great strategy we need to modify it a bit to make it a THD friendly so where do we put the things never under any circumstances set it where it makes sense it makes sense now but somehow never does when we actually go to look for it instead try to put [1:48] things at the point of performance where you use the thing is where the things should go this might mean having several copies of the same thing like a charger for each outlet you tend to charge your devices at so you don't have to go hunting for one every time you need to charge your phone I keep my Tupperware lids on my Tupperware because that's where I'm gonna need them it's not as efficient on space but it's way more efficient on time stay in my jacket pocket dog treats go in the kitchen because that's where I tend to train Chloe if you have a task Eve you often consider setting up a [2:15] station for it with all of the things you need to complete that task restaurants are really good at doing this when I made coffee as a server everything that I needed to make a cup of coffee was within arm's reach so I didn't need to run all over the restaurant looking for all this stuff why was that important a restaurant is full of people trying to get a servers attention having to go hunt for a coffee pot meant getting flagged down by three hangry people in the process kind of like having to hunt for anything when you have ETH t means getting flagged down by at least three distractions in [2:42] the process in either case having everything you need at the point of performance allows you to focus on the task at hand rather than spending 20 minutes dealing with distractions while looking for the thing unless someone didn't put the things back which brings me to dish how do we get ourselves to put the thing back make it easy I have a coat closet but it takes me too much time and effort for me to open the door pull out a hanger hang up my coat zip it up and stick it back in the closet so I got a coat hanger and now I can just throw my jacket on that which [3:08] makes me way more likely to do it if your tiny kitchen trashcan is always too full to put trash in get a bigger trash can this backdrop is paint on a wall it's really hard to lose a wall make it clear it's a lot easier put things back when it's obvious where they go this is a label maker get one label everything you can also use clear containers so you can see what's in it without having to open it the professional organizers I'm working with even suggested using washi tape to outline where things should go make it satisfying if your key hook makes you smile or you love the way your [3:43] bed looks when your comforter is on it you get a tiny reward for putting it there and you're more incentivized to do it I just went to Ikea and got this shelf system thing for my studio and now putting things where they go is fun it's like putting together a puzzle scan for strays before leaving a room or at the end of the day scan for things that aren't where they belong and then put them back at least you know the things are gonna be looking for later finally keep it consistent if the spot for something keeps changing it disrupts our ability to automatically put it [4:11] there and know where to look this is my someone cleaning up doesn't necessarily make things easier for us since then we really don't know where anything is whenever possible we should be the ones to figure out where our stuff should go or at least be involved in that decision-making process and then as much as possible that place should stay put sometimes the things will have more than one place like your keys either go on the key hook in your bag or in the car but it's good to keep those places to a minimum the fewer places an object could be but less time we're gonna spend looking for [4:38] it if it's still an issue stick a tile on it that's how to stop losing things have a place for everything at the point of performance and make it as easy as possible to put it back thank you to my brain board and all my patreon brains I was able to do all of this with my new studio because of you everyone's a bit different when it comes to organization so do what works for you and let us know in the comments below what does so we can you know borrow ideas from each other like subscribe click all the things and I will see you next
