# The Internal Linking Trick That Uses Topical Authority You Already Have Channel: Edward Sturm Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dPc80Z_DZk Duration: 12 min Language: English Words: 2231 Transcript page: https://viewrankai.com/tools/youtube-transcript/2dPc80Z_DZk --- [0:00] Everybody likes internal linking tricks. Optimizing your internal linking is some of the fastest, easiest SEO you can do. So, on this episode of the show, I'm going to share a method that capitalizes on the topical authority you already have within search engines to either get new content ranking or existing content ranking. Search this in Google. Your website's URL space then in quotes a [0:25] relevant keyword you want to rank for. It would look like grid pebble.com space in quotes project management software for agencies juniperkitegoods.com space in quotes waterproof hiking boots copperquillplumbing.com space in quotes emergency plumber Austin and when you do this for your site if you've been active doing SEO and making content you should see a couple of pages come up so this means you already have content relevant to your keyword that's indexed on Google let's do something with it if The very first page that shows when you do this could satisfy [1:01] search intent for your target keyword. Link the most relevant text on the other pages to that first page. Satisfying search intent. The clearest explanation means will somebody come to your page and not immediately go back to the search results because they're not getting what they're looking for. If they're staying on your page because they're getting what they're looking for when they search your target keyword, this is one of the biggest indications that they are satisfied. You don't want people getting frustrated because they're not getting their answer, they're not getting what they're looking for, and then going back to the search results and clicking on something else [1:34] without even doing another search. That would mean they didn't get what they were looking for from your page. So, if you have a page that satisfies search intent for this target keyword, take the most relevant text on your other index pages and internal link that text to your target page. So, let's go back to the madeup websites we used as an example. Your target keyword is project management software for agencies. You have an article about managing client work. You have text on the page that [2:00] says keep agency projects organized. Internal link that to the page most likely to satisfy search intent for the keyword project management software for agencies. Or your target keyword is waterproof hiking boots. And the top page that shows is pretty well optimized for waterproof hiking boots and would do a good job satisfying search intent. And then you have a guide about hiking in wet weather that has the exact text in it, waterproof hiking boots. So just link that exact text to this target page for waterproof hiking boots. Or you're an Austin plumber, your copper quill plumbing. You have a page that satisfies search intent for emergency plumber [2:36] Austin and you have an article about burst pipes that uses the text 247 plumbing help in Austin and you link that text to the page that's appropriate for emergency plumber Austin. Now, you don't always want to use exact match anchor text where the anchor text for the internal link is the exact keyword you're targeting. If all you have is this exact match anchor text, that looks unnatural. And if you jam it into your content where it also reads unnatural, it could make people less likely to click the internal link. Now, what if you don't have any pages that would immediately satisfy search intent for your target keyword? Maybe you have a [3:14] section on one of your pages that would satisfy search intent, but it's further down on the page. You could create an anchor link to use for the internal links. An anchor link just looks like you could see it on the landing page for my SEO course. So, if you go to edwardstrom.com/compact-keywords/hprogram-contents, [3:35] if you go to that URL, it takes you directly down to the section on the landing page for what's in my SEO course. The section is called how this course gets you customers, users, and warm leads. It's an overview of what's in each section of compact keywords. So that's an anchor link. If your keyword is sameday water heater repair Austin, and you have a broader page about water heater repair, and halfway down on that page, there's a section called same day water heater repair in Austin, you can create an anchor link for that section, and then internal link to this anchor link. Now, it's important to note that [4:09] this is not ideal at all because you want to have relevant content in search engines and relevance is best determined at the page level, which we will get into in a moment, not at a section level. A page is more likely to be relevant if right from the top it's optimized for a specific keyword, not in the middle of the page. All right. So, why does this internal linking method work? So, you have pages that are [4:33] already indexed for a target keyword. Google already sees topical relevance between these pages and the keyword. The internal links pass authority to the page that you want to rank. Also important to note, links on pages getting clicks in the search results in a search engine pass more authority than other links. And then going one step deeper, internal links on this SEO content, internal links that are clicked are the most valuable. I have an episode on this, the $50,000 internal linking experiment. Links that get clicked carry more weight. Episode 1,163 of the podcast. Google likely tracks clicks and uses it as behavioral signals to very partially determine if the SEO [5:16] content is good. If it's being interacted with, that's a more positive sign. And Google looks at if the link is likely to be clicked. And internal links that are likely to be clicked carry more weight. What you want to avoid here is you want to avoid having so many internal links in your SEO content that [5:32] your content just looks like SEO spam. And you see that sometimes unnatural internal linking or too many internal links. It makes your content look like spam and then makes users more likely to go back to the search result and click on something else without doing another search. And if you have too many links, it could also hurt clicks to the internal links that are most important to you. So, you still want to be strategic with your internal links. And then finally, I said link the relevant text on your index pages to your target page. Relevant anchor text gives Google [6:04] stronger context about the target page. Now, if you don't have any content that would satisfy search intent for your target keyword, or you want to just go the extra step because it's way better to have a page optimized for a keyword than a section on a page optimized for a keyword, create a new page. If you don't have any content that really satisfies search intent, create a new page. Before you write that page, just spend 5 to 10 minutes thinking and writing through these three questions. I recommend not using AI for this, actually writing it [6:35] yourself, thinking about it yourself. The three questions are, who is searching your primary keyword? What do they want? What are they looking to achieve? This will help a ton in making content that better satisfies search intent for your target keyword. Then when you create the new page, put the target keyword in the page title, the URL slug, the H1, the beginning of the first sentence, metad description is optional. When you see the language you searched at the top of the content you click on, you know you're in the right place. You feel like, okay, this SEO [7:05] content is going to give me what I want. And putting your target keyword in these places is also extremely important to search engines to signal that your content is relevant to your keyword. Then do your best to satisfy search intent on this new page above the fold before people start scrolling. Give the searcher what they're looking for right away with as few words as possible. Try to be concise. Then make the rest of the page and internal link the relevant text on your pages that are already indexed for this keyword to your new page. And this helps push the new page towards page one of search engines. Better yet, [7:39] in the top three of search engines, better yet number one on search engines. and then increasing the pages visibility in AI search because the more visible you are in search engines, the more you get cited in large language models. That's it. Super easy. I recommend especially using this with your top offunnelformational content. For bottom offunnel, having a lot of internal links in bottom offunnel content could distract people from clicking on call to actions. I generally prefer to keep my bottom offunnel SEO pages very minimal because I want to direct people to click on the CTAs. Bottom ofunnel content is for converting and if you throw in a [8:19] bunch of internal links for example because you want to boost the SEO performance for your other pages, you might miss out on a bunch of conversions and you don't want that. But you might also have a hub page that's housing your bottom offunnel SEO landing pages. And on the hub page, something that I recommend is before you even make the content, write out the keywords that you're targeting and just put them right there on the hub page so you can start [8:42] getting relevance for these keywords. Then when you create the content, internal link what appears on the hub page to the new page. And it's very common when you do this, you will literally see hub pages ranking for target keywords where the hub page isn't satisfying search intent, but it's ranking because you use that target keyword on the hub page. And so now all [9:00] you have to do is create that content. you're already ranking and then internal link the hub page to the new content. Anyway, I really like this trick. Super easy internal links. A lot of people in SEO talk about them, but they're still crazy undervalued and crazy underoptimized. So, I hope this episode was helpful. I recommend mainly going after keywords that will make you money, keywords that will get you customers, users, warm leads calling you up. And if you want to save years learning how to find these keywords, the keywords that make you money, how to target them with bottom offunnel SEO landing pages that are made to convert the searchers who [9:36] land on these pages, how to structure your site for these pages, how to build backlinks, how to do an SEO technical audit, an SEO content audit, examples in every niche, and a ton more.
